Souk Ahras, Algeria TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit has taught me that it is important to manage your class room correctly, to ensure a effective and relaxed learning environment for your students. My body language and presence in the classroom also plays a big role in the effective study of the students. Eye contact, gesture and voice are the tools that I will use to maintain discipline, give instructions and maintaining rapport in the class.
It is also important to find the correct balance of teacher talking time and student talking time, while being a valuable and necessary source of correct and natural English but also giving students the opportunity to speak the language themselves.
Grouping of students also helps to promote a fun and entertaining approach to learning, as well as allowing students that are shy or have low self esteem to actively partake in activities that they would normally try to avoid by making the environment more comfortable for them. Grouping is also a helpful way to encourage student talking time and lessening teacher talking time and to position yourself in the class according to the activity, the role of the teacher in the current activity and the space available. This is also import when considering writing on a board. To ensure that you always have the attention of the class, preparing written work on a board before hand will lessen the time you have your back turned towards the class or, involving the class and letting the students help you to write on the board.
I have also learned that when responding to problem behavior it is important for the teacher to always act according to the schools code of conduct for discipline and to act as soon as behavioral problems arise while being aware that shouting doesn't solve problems and that you as a teacher should never go over board on the rules.
