In this unit, I learned the basics of how to teach beginners, young learners, and business English. For beginners, there is a spectrum in terms of the type of beginner that they are. There is the absolute beginner, the false beginner, the adult beginner, the young beginner, and the beginner who doesn't know the Roman alphabet. Even though they all have a different start in learning English, it is usually easiest to start from the very beginning anyway. This helps to eliminate anything that was learned incorrectly and can help with students who also need to learn the writing system as well. I learned that young learners can be the most rewarding to teach. This may be because of the "sponge" idea in which they soak up everything they are learning, or because the teacher is one of the first people to help them on their English learning journey. One thing is for certain, teaching young learners requires patience, varying tasks, and the ability to see past mistakes and allow them to grow in the English language in a way that native English children do. Business English can be one of the scarier parts to teach because of the idea that we have to learn the content in which they work, but it doesn't really work that way. Learning the basics is definitely a good idea, but we are there to teach English. It is our expertise, and we should not shy away from the business world.
