In this unit, we focused on receptive skills and how to use/teach these skills in the classroom. I was surprised to find that speaking and listening were classified in two different categories. I had always paired listening and talking and writing and reading together. I had also considered the first two more important than the latter. However, this article brings to focus how important all skills are for learning, especially receptive skills.
I think this unit also provided good advice as to how to choose what articles or reading texts for students. The book my junior high school students use now, sadly, I think is very boring. I can see why students are not interested in the text. It does cover a variety of topics, but most articles the students do not have a strong interest in. I think articles that compare cultures or articles would be more interesting, but of course, if I were to chose a text, I would have to consider what the students find interesting. I also like the fill in the blank activities or making comparison activities to hone receptive skills shone in this chapter.
