Unit three has taught me the importance of classroom management from the characteristics and actions of the teacher themselves to the way the classroom is laid out and dealing with discipline in the classroom.
From this unit, I have gained acknowledgement of the importance of being inclusive and involving the whole classroom. For example, I have learnt that STT (Student Talk Time) is more important that TTT teacher talk time. I have also learnt how certain methods such as pair work and more beneficial to shier students than the whole classroom discussions.
The layout of the classroom plays a large role in the activities provided in the classroom, for example, a sho-horse set up might be more beneficial in classroom discussion and pair work and individual desks might work better when giving a presentation.
I have discovered the importance of building a rapport with the students, and how vital it is for maintaining discipline and respect from the students. shouting at students discourages rapport and so does turning up late and being late with returning homework as it makes the student lose respect for the teacher.
Giving clear instruction and staying calm are two skills that are useful for a teacher as it puts the students at ease and being in a relaxed environment is conducive to learning.
