This unit talks about the pros and cons of using course books. Some of the benefits of using them are: it provides a balances mixture of grammar, vocabulary, and skills work; it makes quantifying progress easier for both students and teachers; they have been tried and tested, thus offering some security. Some of the disadvantages of course books are that they are quite rigid, as well as universal - meaning they might not always be perfectly suited for particular cultural zones and classes of students. Therefore, the teacher might want to supplement the course book with authentic materials and/or created materials. The unit gives examples and ideas of such materials, placing focus on how to properly choose them for different English levels.
