There are 4 present tenses in the English language: present simple, present continuous, present perfect, and present perfect continuous. Present simple uses a noun with the basic form of a verb. Present continuous uses a noun with a is/am and a verb ending with ing (present participle). Present perfect uses a noun with a have/has, and a verb in a simple past tense. Present perfect continuous uses a noun with a have/has, plus been, plus a verb ending with ing. There are exceptions to the rules when it comes to verbs in past tense (used for present perfect, and present perfect continuous). They have to be memorized.
