Bergville, KwaZulu Natal TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
In this unit I have learned about the different types of lesson materials and coursebooks, and how/when they should be used throughout a course. Regarding lesson materials there are two types; authentic and creative. Authentic materials would be magazines, brochures, poems, etc that are interesting students and can instill confidence in them because they are learning from actual items used in the real world. Creative materials are what a teacher makes on their own for a lesson, which can really let more artistic teachers shine and well as make lesson more interesting. Unlike authentic materials which can't be level graded, creative materials can be.
For course books there are many advantages which include a solid foundation and clear progression of a course. Also, hey provide a syllabus and structure for lessons and also provide security for teachers and students. Some disadvantages are that course books can be boring and predictable for students, as well as a bit generic and not specifically catered towards your class. Course books also can make teachers lazy, which can also lead to less interesting classes.
It is important that course books be used in conjunction with creative and authentic materials, as to keep lessons interesting while also providing a solid foundation for the whole course. There also may be sections in a course book hat could be too advanced or not applicable to the course, so a teacher should either replace sections with more relevant material or augmenting/supplementing them with additional material.
