Unit 20 examines the problem situations that can occur in the classroom.
Every teacher has the experience to face the new group of students for the first time. Such lessons are the most important because they can help to establish rapport between the students and the teacher. Sometimes the teacher have the first lesson with the new group, sometimes with already existing group.
During the first lesson the teacher usually does not use the course book but uses the activities to establish rapport and find out about students. For these purposes surveys, “Tell us about” activities, needs analysis or pass the ball game may be used.
Warmers are usually used in the class to inspire and motivate the students to use English. Tongue twisters, Hangman game, Pictionary, memory games can be used as a warmer which should be fun nut short.
Different levels of language can be the biggest problem for the teacher. There are some methods to deal with this problems. For example, the teacher can use different materials for students of different levels. The teacher can use the same material but different tasks, or pair strong and weak students.
The inexperienced teachers can face the problems when they have the large classes. There are also some useful techniques for good lessons. For example, use worksheets, group work, pair work, choral repetition, dynamics, group leaders appointment.
Students like to use their native language instead of English, especially when they have problems with expression their ideas or the wish to explain something. To avoid this situation, the teacher should use appropriate material, clear instructions, responses for English questions, etc.
Sometimes teachers have reluctant students in their groups. For such students the best solution is pair work, controlled practice or role-play.
The most frequent difficulties that students face is difficulties with listening tasks. To solve this problem the teacher pre-teach the most difficult vocabulary or play the extract several times.
