Abbeville, Georgia TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
In this unit I learned that teachers can use a traditional course book or create their own materials in order to instruct a class. These materials can be either authentic or created. Authentic materials, which are not graded for EFL students, consist of just about anything a native speaker would hear or read (e.g. newspapers, magazines, films on video, etc.). Created materials (e.g. crosswords, flashcards, word search puzzles, etc.) are usually designed by the teacher to replace or supplement materials from a course book. Many students find created materials to be more interesting and relevant than the material found in the course books.
Furthermore, I learned that using a course book has its advantages and disadvantages. Course books provide a good framework of tried and tested material. A good teacher, however, will not rely solely upon the course book. A teacher may decide to omit certain lessons from the course book that they feel are not beneficial or relevant to their students and replace them with their own created materials. Also, at times the teacher created materials may just supplement the course book lesson to reinforce a language point with the students. Bottom line is the teacher should have the adaptability to take what is good with the basic material found in the course book and mix in some created materials that they feel will most benefit their students' overall engagement with the language.
