Though reading and writing are often skills that need dedicated focus, I find it refreshing how the section has given strong examples of how to employ them in tandem with speaking and writing to create a more holistic lesson approach to skills. It seems that reading and listening in particular lean towards the Study phase, due to their nature as input (and Activate's emphasis on production), but this doesn't diminish the degree to which they can improve, even when confined to this phase (and even get some low-key use in the Engage phases demonstrated).
Like with most other parts of lesson design and feedback, receptive skills need to foster confidence, so using materials that aren't far beyond the students' level is key. I particularly liked the emphasis on rotating topics to cater to the whole class's interests, and how to use pictures or discussions to bring out interest if it isn't already there. This is an encouraging set of examples, and I plant to experiment with some of these Patchwork plan structures to get my own learners to feel more confident.
