This unit was very helpful, and a little challenging, in that it brought so much theory together in two practical situations that were both rich in learnings. Much of the difference between the two classes related to the teacher’s personality, attitude and behaviour and how much these aspects impact on the effectiveness of the learning experience. This group of elementary students were eager to learn in both situations but in the first video, the teacher’s style got in the way, and in the second video, the teacher’s style was clearly motivating and enabling. The frequent and appropriate use of elicitation and prompting was well demonstrated throughout the second video – the teacher used a variety of these techniques to stimulate both engagement and discovery. The second video also effectively demonstrated how a lesson should flow – while the general approach/structure was ESA Straight Arrow, the use of different methods and techniques highlighted how much has to come together to make a lesson work well, and only experience will help achieve this.
