Big Pool, Maryland TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
The twelfth unit focused on teaching productive skills (writing and speaking). Typically, writing time is concentrated as outside class time because it minimizes student- teacher or student-student speaking though it is an essential part to learning English. Everyone has individualized handwriting styles but if the handwriting is hard to decipher or sloppy then the teacher should gently encourage the student to spend more time on neat letters that stay on the line and are similar height and width. English spelling orally to paper is tricky because there are sneaky vowel combinations so extensive reading helps familiarize the students with seeing words written. Letting the student choose the topic they want to write about (e.g. cows, trucks, food) engages them and adds personal interest. It is also a reward for the teacher to see what the students write about so they can get to know them better.
Speaking activities are divided into two groups: accuracy activities where the focus is on producing correct language and fluency where the focus is on keeping a flow of conversation going and experimenting. Debates, role play, and simulations are examples of creative communication that emphasizes fluency and the teacher does not correct errors. Model dialogues, drilling, and prompting are examples of guided activities that emphasize accuracy and this is where the students or teacher should gently correct repeated errors.
