This unit covered the use of coursebooks in the classroom. It looked at the advantages (structure, tried and tested syllabus, easier for inexperienced teachers) and the disadvantages (rigid structure, written for a general audience, can be predictable). The conclusion of the unit advised teachers to use textbooks as a guide, but supplement or swap out exercises with their own material to make the content more suitable for their particular class.
