This unit gives a general overview of how certain factors can influence class discipline. It considers the ramifications of variations in class sizes, in student groupings and seating arrangements, in how one uses eye contact, in the use of names, and in the extent to which time is devoted to teacher talk time vs student talk time. In my recent teaching of adults and older teens, I have not used a variety of student groupings and this chapter encouraged me to consider doing that more. I also appreciated the reminder to use a students name at the end, rather than at the beginning of a question and to refrain from always taking turns in a routine manner, such as proceeding around the table.
