Teachers should invest a considerable amount of time into teaching modal auxiliary verbs, the passive voice, relative clauses and especially phrasal verbs as these may be quite a challenge for their students. English language learners might be confused by modal verbs because they are used differently than other verbs and in a wide variety of situations such as asking for permission and giving advice. Teachers can use role plays, activities about rules and signs to teach modals. As students progress through the levels, they will encounter passive voice. Teachers can use activities where students are supposed to match active and passive sentences or general knowledge quizzes to teach it. As for phrasal verbs teachers should track which phrasal verbs have already been taught and try to use them naturally during uncontrolled practice/conversation.
