In this unit we learnt the usage of the five main conditionals. Zero conditional is formed by the construction 'if/when + present tense, present tense' and refers to the actions and facts that are irrefutable. First conditional is formed by the construction 'if + present tense, will' and is used to desribe a 'real' situation in the future that is possible, probable or even certain, once the condition has been satisfied. Second conditional is formed by the following construction 'if + past simple, would/could/might + base form' and communicates a present or future 'unreal', hypothetical situation that is not true and is unlikely ever to be true. Third conditional is formed by the construction 'if + past perfect, would/could/might + have + past participle and refers to a hypothtical past action and hypothetical past result. Mixed conditional refers to a hypothetical past action or state, and the hypothetical present consequence and is formed by 'if + past perfect, would + base form'. To teach the conditionals a teacher can use: split sentences, complete the conditional, chain conditionals, what a question, nuclear bunker role play, what would happen if...? When we turn direct speech into reported we need to now the certain rules that are happen in changing forms of the verbs tenses, pronouns, time expressions. In general present becomes past (backshifting). We can use the following ideas for teaching the reported speech: intermediaries, reporting verbs, media interviews.
