Past tense: for example; I worked, I started, I went to the shop yesterday
Usage: for past actions when the time is not asked

Past perfect tense: for example; John had finished, John had not finished
Usage: to represent actions that occurred before other actions
Past perfect continuous tense: for example; John had been cooking , John had not been cooking.
Usage: To talk about longer actions or situations in the past that had been going on continuously up to the past moment that we are thinking about
