The focus of this unit was on how to manage classes effectively. It is necessary for a teacher to be organized and to have good control of their classes in order to ensure a smooth lesson where input is received by the students. Enforcing a good class is dependent on multiple factors. This includes how the teacher maintains eye contact, gestures and a clear and projected voice, as well as how he/she organizes students in an activity (individual, pair work, or group work)and how the classroom is set up (classroom arrangement). Teachers must also be careful of how they keep the attention of the class by ensuring they give attention to each student equally, and allowing enough student talk time as opposed to too much teacher talk time during a lesson. Giving simple instructions, establishing rapport, and maintaining discipline in the correct manner will also aid in establishing a good class.
In this unit, I learned a lot about how to manage a class more effectively. One of the things I learned was that it is important to allow students enough student to student interaction and to let them learn from each other. I realized that classroom arrangement can also play a vital part in helping students stay attentive during a lesson, hence it should be arranged wisely depending on the type of activity to be done in class. Lastly, I learned that there are many different ways to give instructions, and that rather than giving elaborate instructions, simple and clear instructions are more effective for learners of a second language.
