This unit was a very good comprehensive review of the parts of speech. The 8 basic parts of speech are nouns,verbs, adjectives,adverbs, prepositions,pronouns,conjunctions, and interjections. There are many sub-categories within each of these classifications.
It is important for an ESL teacher to have a very strong grasp on the different parts of speech because the part of speech often dictates the placement of the word in a sentence. As native speakers of English, we sometimes unconsciously use these patterns without really thinking about WHY it is so. However, understanding the patterns and reasoning for word placement is very useful for students to be able to form grammatically sound sentences and gain fluency.
