When a teacher meets a group for the first time, it is important to establish rapport between the students to set the tone for the rest of the course/school year. In order to find out more about the students a teacher should conduct a survey or provide an ice-breaker. It is also advised for a teacher to participate in ice-breakers or warm-ups so that students can get to know about their teacher. Warmers should be fun, last not more than 5 minutes, be motivating and encourage students to use English. That's why using grammar for warmers isn't the best idea. If there are students of different levels in the group, a teacher shouldn't communicate only with the students who are stronger. Weaker students should be paired with stronger, materials and tasks can differ according to their level, sometimes a teacher should behave neutrally and let weak students themselves understand that they need to put more efforts. Managing large classes can be really challenging. In order to make everyone participate in class worksheets, pair/group work, choral repetition should be used. Besides. a teacher should make sure he and a board is seen/heard well by all students. A teacher should not let his students use their native language, otherwise they will be willing to do it quite often. To avoid that, a teacher should make his explanations clear and use the language appropriate to the students' level. Moreover, students should be reminded all the time that only the English language can be used in the classroom. Sometimes teachers deal with students who don't want to participate in the lesson. Role-plays, pair work and controlled practice can be useful in such situations. Listening is usually students' weakest point but it doesn't mean that a teacher should avoid developing listening skills of his students. In order to make things easier a teacher should pre-teach difficult grammar, be careful when selecting materials and keep the lesson at the pace of the majority of the class.
