There are several ways to evaluate and test students. There are three ways we can evaluate language levels and language experience. These tools help teachers allow students to succeed in learning a language.
The first concept is to look at tutorials, which are short intervals when the teacher quizzes the class as a whole or as individuals, which can aim at reviewing and discussing how well or what problems the student may have in learning a language. By evaluating the student, in this manner, it helps the teacher easily see strengths and weaknesses in a group.
The second is evaluation by the student. This has the student explain or expand on what they feel they are getting out of the course and what areas they want help with. This creates a personal evaluation for the teacher to know how to help the student individually.
The third way of evaluation is through tests. Tests help in many areas and allows the student to know what their exact language level is. There are five different test types: placement, diagnostic, progress, practice, and proficiency. With proficiency testing, there are three types to consider: General (KET, PET, FCE, CAE, CPE), Business (TOEIC, Cambridge BEC, BULATS), and Academic (TOEFL and IELTs). Each of these categories aim for a certain level and how experienced a student is in the language.
As teachers, we must be able to evaluate and help the students to apply what they know. If we can help a student in their language studies influentially, they will succeed immensely.
