First, this Unit provides an overview of the roles of a teacher and the kinds of learners we may encounter. I learned about the unique problems that are common among adult students. This information coincides with my personal experience teaching adults.
Next, it discusses one-on-one and group lesson structures including the advantages and disadvantages of each as well as ways to overcome issues. The advice presented is useful and got me thinking about other ways to prepare for and handle potential hurdles.
Third, the four skills are discussed along with examples of ways business English students can apply them. I learned some new activities I could use in my lessons to improve my students reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. I believe it is important that activities be applicable to the students' lives and provide them with skills they can use in real-life, day-to-day situations. This is important for motivation and retention. I was happy to see this information included in this unit.
Finally, various teaching methods were presented. This was a good refresher for me since first learning about these and other methods in my TESOL course years ago and now I can consider them in regards to adult learners. The ESA method encouraged by my instructors at TEFL International has been very effective for me and my students.
In order to complete the task sheet, I researched more about teaching approaches and theories which provided me with a lot of new information and inspired me to dig deeper. I'm especially interested in the Theory of Multiple Intelligences and the concept of "communicative language teaching". I have found interactive lessons based on natural communication and utilizing a variety of tools to be more effective for my students as well as more interesting for everyone. I'll be reading more about these methods as I develop my personal curriculum.
In conclusion, this unit provided a lot of practical and useful information. It also sparked my interest in language learning methods. I'm confident future units will be just as informative and inspiring.
