This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
As an english teacher in South korea working with all different age groups and abilities, this course has given me tremendous insight into the modalities and approaches to various types of teaching methods. I had little experience before coming here and started working two days after arriving without any training or guidance. Luckily, the private language academy I work for has a set curriculum, textbook ,and testing that cycles on a monthly basis. Anyone can do my job, but this course taught me how to really think like a teacher and make it enjoyable for the students. I started using the ESA format, getting my students warmed up to speak english before jumping right into the lesson. This got the energy flowing with a bit of fun. I learned that to be an effective teacher, I need to ditch the textbook and come up with a mix of worksheets and games; kids will learn best when they’re having fun. I benefited from a review of the parts of speech, vocabulary, grammar and functions and how to teach them. It was crucial for me to know the difference between productive and receptive skills because I really see the importance now of having a balance of both in a lesson. I was really interested in teaching pronunciation and phonology as it can benefit the students learning and confidence when they do it right. Overall, this course taught me there’s many ways to teach and learn, finding the right mix while making the lesson fun is up to the teacher.
