This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
As a native english speaker, I learned how to look at english as a foreign language. This included understanding which tense is constructed in which manner and why and how it is used, which are things I took for granted or never fully realized as a native speaker. I used english according to what "sounded correct." I gained a new appreciation for my native language, its importance, and the way it is taught to non-naive speakers.
Through this course I also learned how important it is to be a thoughtful and motivating instructor. My personality, the way I manage my class, and the way I present learning material have a critical affect on the learners' experience studying the english language. I can either discourage and bore them, or really inspire and motivate them. I saw both these situations occur in my previous experience working as an english language teaching aide in spain. It was amazing to see how sensitive and responsive students were.
With this new self-awareness and the language teaching skills gained through this course, I plan to continuously develop my teaching style and personality to better serve my students so that they are motivated to learn english, enjoy class, and successfully learn english as a foreign language. Specifically, I will use what I have gained to supplement future teaching opportunities working with Hispanic students in the US and in latin america. I want to incorporate activities that encourage students to connect with me as the instructor, connect with their peers, and experiment and be creative with the language. I will also make sure to understand and know my students and their skills to adapt the material to their needs and engage their interests through english.
