This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This course has taught me several valuable skills, as well as given me confidence in my own knowledge of english language teaching that I will take with me into the classroom.
Through the completion of this course I have become more knowledgeable in the areas of grammar, including tenses, modals, phrasal verbs and conditionals. My confidence in teaching grammar has improved tremendously. I will use my gained knowledge and apply it to the classroom setting. This is a basic skill that every language teacher must be familiar with. I now have the resources necessary to understand the formation of these grammar points and how to teach them in a creative way.
Furthermore, I have learned the importance of lesson planning through this course. Not only should I always have on hand a working lesson plan, I should also continuously adapt it to my audience and the tasks that I want students to complete. Lesson plans are working documents and are never permanent. I have become aware that if I want to have a successful lesson, more than an hour’s worth of planning will be necessary.
As there are a variety of learners, it’s simply not possible to apply a lesson to different students. I have learned the importance of considering the abilities of the students when creating lessons. I hope to become more aware of the methods to consider through experience in the classroom.
Being a native speaker of english, a lot of language is natural to us and goes without notice. It is therefore difficult to always remember how to approach a class, and what may or may not be appropriate for some students. It’s important to choose the correct words to use. Learning about my language has provided me with the most enriching resource.
It was a pleasure to have taken this course to teach me and challenge me in order to become a better teacher. I hope to carry with me the things I have learned throughout the course, while benefiting my future students.
