Personally, I have gained a lot from this course. Coming into it with two years of teaching experience, I wasn't really sure what to expect. Friends who had already taken other TEFL/
tesol courses had already given me their opinions, but I was determined to enter into it with an open mind and absorb as much useful information as possible.
I had always felt that my approach to teaching was missing one key thing: confidence with the theoretical aspect of the english language. I already had 28 years of practice, but as much of the grammar and subtler intricacies of the language were second nature to me, I often found them difficult to explain to my students. I imagine this is the case with the vast majority of ESL teachers out there. It was to my embarrassment that my Korean co-teachers would usually have a better theoretical knowledge of the language than I had myself. Furthermore, I felt that this was unprofessional and, upon deciding to return to the ESL sector, I sought to remedy this.
The course has given me almost exactly what I was looking for. Although I already had confidence with the practical side of teaching, I was able to gain confidence with the theoretical component of ESL instruction, including topics like phrasal verbs that were hitherto unknown to me by name. I can now take this confidence into the classroom with me and pass it on to my students.
