I feel I have personally gained much insight into the teaching of
english as a language but also teaching in general. In particular, my understanding of the rules, forms and usages of grammar has been enhanced as a result of taking this unit. The distinction between each particular tense within the broader tenses - past, present and future - and the subtle differences in meaning expressed in these, was particularly challenging and enlightening. The breakdown of the different parts of speech in Unit 2 provided a solid basis for further learning of the technical aspects of the
english language (both within the context of the unit and beyond) and the teaching of it.
Of particular note is the knowledge of lesson structure provided by this unit. Having three distinct stages of the lesson - 'engage', 'study' and 'activate' - each with their own functions and their own types of activities, has provided me with a workable framework with which to plan lessons of varying formats, be they 'patchwork',' boomerang' or 'straight ESA'.
This course has also been a valuable resource of ideas for teaching
english in the classroom. Activities have been provided for each stage of the lesson and are as diverse as written worksheets, acting, communication games etc. This has supplied me with a host of ideas of take into the classroom and has also provided a suitable basis from which to form my own ideas.
