Can I teach English as a foreign language in Africa?

The wonderful continent of Africa covers a wide and diverse range of regions, from the Mediterranean beach resorts of North Africa to the vineyards and wildlife parks in the south. Despite the fact that jobs for ESL teachers are not as numerous or as widespread as you will find in many other parts of the world, there are opportunities waiting for those who wish to find them. The key to finding the right position for you might well be a degree of flexibility regarding your destination. A little patience might also be required.

Where can I get a paid job teaching English in Africa?

The best region for finding paid teaching jobs in Africa is the north of the continent. North African countries such as Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia all have a strong demand for ESL teachers, particularly in private language academies. Another option is private tutoring which can be a viable choice in larger towns and cities. Paid positions are not easy to find in most other areas unless you have contacts who can sniff out opportunities in local language schools, universities, or international schools. One exception is South Africa where jobs are always available. However, there are usually plenty of local teachers who are ready to take up vacant positions so it can be difficult for other nationalities to get a look in.

Should I consider volunteering as an English teacher in Africa?

A large number of foreign ESL teachers use their skills in volunteer positions as these are available in many parts of the continent. This is a great option if you are looking for a unique and rewarding experience in a part of the world that most people can only dream of visiting. An internet search for volunteer teaching in Africa will bring up a wide choice of programs across many different countries. Depending on the program you choose, your volunteer position could be for any length of time, from as little as a week right through to a couple of years. As well as the personal fulfillment this type of work can provide, your African experience will aid your development as a teacher and look good on your CV/resume when you start applying for your next teaching job.
