Which TESOL courses are accredited?

Within the world of ESL teaching there is little in the way of common regulation so course providers are free to offer whatever courses they wish. For the trainee, this can make it difficult to know which courses are the best and which are best left alone. On the positive side, there is something you can do to check the overall quality of the course and its contents. If the course you are interested in has been accredited by an independent body then it is fair to assume that it will be of reasonable quality. Put simply, an accrediting body is an independent third party who reviews the standards of a course provider and gives them their accreditation if they are satisfied with the results of that review.

How can I tell if a TESOL course is accredited?

By visiting a course providers website it should be easy to find any accreditation they have been awarded as they will make sure it is clearly displayed. While the vast majority of providers are legitimate and will only advertise genuine accreditations, it is still wise to do a bit of research into any that look suspicious as there is nothing to stop an unscrupulous provider simply setting up their own accrediting body that isn't actually recognized by international employers.

How else can I check the validity of a TESOL course?

While advertised accreditation by respected teaching organizations is a good sign that an individual course is of good quality, it is also advisable to do a bit of research into what previous students of the course have to say about it. A quick online search should provide plenty of feedback on the course via ESL forums and blogs. If you find that the course you are interested in is accredited by a well known teaching body and the feedback from previous trainees is largely good then you should be confident that it will provide everything you need to get your new teaching career started.
