The productive skills to teach are speaking and writing.
Writing relies more on accuracy as speaking requires more fluency.
Accuracy activities are generally in the study phase to check on the use of correct language.
Fluency activities are commonly found in the activate phase to allow experimentation with the language and encourage creativity and effectiveness of the flow of communication.
Techniques to encourage interaction would be:
-providing plenty of controlled and guided practice before fluency activities
-make speaking activities purposeful with and created desire and need to communicate
-careful planning with activities that students may need time to think abut what they are going to say
During speaking activities the teacher should:
-monitor to evaluate fluency and provide encouragement
-give students time to prepare with clear aims
-provide positive feedback
-sometimes video or audio record to help with possible improvements
-note down recurrent errors in grammar, pronunciation and use of vocabulary as a class and individually
-include communicative and linguistic games
