Unit 11 was about teaching receptive skills. It is always important to keep the students' interests in mind, reinforcing the idea that it is imperative to get to know your students and create a relationship with them as soon as possible. There are 5 different ways we read and listen. The first is predictive skills. This is when you predict the content of an article or dialogue from a headline or introduction. Second is specific information- scanning. We do this when we are looking for specific information in an article, such as looking for a football score. Then there is the general idea. This is wen we read or listen for the gist of the text or dialogue. Understanding every single word is not important. Next is detailed information. This is when we do read to understand everything in detail. We do this when we read or listen to directions on how to get somewhere or do something. Finally is deduction from context. This is when you need to deduce the meaning of individual words or phrases from the context in which we hear or read them.
