This unit is about the importance of coursebooks and lesson materials.
It is easier to work and to teach using a coursebook as you,as a teacher, has a general framework, and this really helps a lot. However, students love new, additional materials, and not all coursebooks have all possible exercises, so it is very important to introduce either authentic or created materials once you get to know the students and understand their specific needs. Modern coursebooks are really equipped with various types of exercises designed to activate all students' skills. Still, sometimes, additional materials are a must (e.g. with very good and motivated students, or the case with students who come from a particular country and who have to practise specific pronunciation patterns unlike some other students who come from some other countries).
When authentic materials are concerned, we should be very careful when we choose what we are going to introduce in the lesson because students can become demotivated if the material is too difficult for them to grasp.
I would say the perfect solution is to use a coursebook as a basis, and then, depending on a group or class or students' specific needs, to use additional materials as needed.
