In this unit we learned about different equipment and aids that can be used in the classroom. As an ALT in Japan, it made me reflect on my current use of visual aids and equipment. At my elementary school, the book we use has an accompanying software program that is interactive and shows videos. I think this has proven very effective. Also when possible, I use songs and videos for my younger classes as they can enjoy English and it holds attention. However, I have, and my head teachers, have experienced many problems with technology at one point or the other. I seldom have a backup, so this course made me realize that, that is essential.
However, in the junior high school I work at, the head teachers mainly use the blackboard and visuals they bring, they seldom use DVDs.
This made me reflect back to when I was in school. I remember having one class about global studies, and more often than not, we watched movies and documentaries on a certain topic. It was not for the fact that the teacher was lazy, because she is actually one of the best teachers I have ever had I believe, but it held our attention and got us interested in topics that would probably be more boring to learn in a textbook format.
While I am limited to the individual school's equipment, I believe future technology will only advance classrooms, not hinder it.
