Cixi, China TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
When students are taking a class to learn a new language, their teacher is the direct vehicle of that new language. How the teacher approaches the class and how they treat their students can have a profound effect on how much the students understand the content, and how they feel about the class overall.
Before the class even begins, a teacher can take the time to introduce themselves, and ask for their students’ names. This simple greeting is a great way to start the class. It shows students that the teacher wants each of their students to be familiar with them, and that the teacher cares about and wants to know the students. Even before the class has started, the students are in a positive mood.
Another simple thing a teacher can do it smile at their students. It might be easy sometimes to fall into the trap of being a “serious teacher,” but if the students see that their teacher is having a good time, they are more likely to be at ease and relaxed. This kind of atmosphere encourages student participation, which is crucial in a language class.
Maybe the most important aspect for classroom atmosphere is the teacher’s overall attitude. Do they encourage all responses, even mistakes? Do they give proper positive reinforcement? Does it seem like they want to be there? The attitude that a teacher brings into the classroom can almost always be seen in the responding attitude of the students.
A good teacher should want to encourage their students to learn whatever they’re teaching. In order to do this, they should treat their students with respect, and encourage their participation and growth. If a teacher takes their time to really care for their students and care about what they’re teaching, it will show in the level of student participation and student satisfaction.
