I never thought about how confusing reporting can be for non-native speakers. Verbs change forms, time usually becomes ambiguous because an undetermined amount of time may have passed or will pass, and how to order the pronouns like "(she) Jane said (he) John said he was..." or "She said he said he was..." and "She said he said she was..." This will be a though concept because I know native speakers who still don't understand how to formulate these sentences correctly.
