I think testing is an essential tool to judge student progress. However, I know from experience that too much testing can make the lessons less enjoyable and more oppressive. I would like to have formative progress tests regularly in my classrooms and use this to ensure that my students have the knowledge required to do well in their external exams (should they have any).
I found the number of external exams interesting. I imagine which exams are taken will depend on the school I am teaching at. As such, I will not worry about these too much. Instead, I should spend more time thinking about the best ways to keep my students challenging themselves and learning without feeling like everything they are always being tested.
