Unit 9 compares and contrasts the pros and cons of providing instruction with authentic and inauthentic materials. Authentic materials—i.e. a Rotten Tomatoes Review of the movie Deadpool2, an American menu from a chain restaurant a la Applebees or Starbucks, or a newspaper such as the Washington Pose or NY times—provide an invigorating experience for the new English learner because it provides them a glimpse into the actual material they'll be dealing with in real world situations, such as booking a flight or navigating the highways in Southern California to find their way to a hospital. On the flip side, course work material is tried and true and provides definite structure to implement to the student. Unit 9 encourages teachers who are provided with coursework materials to alter the coursework and improvise with authentic materials from the "real world."
