Drawing up a lesson plan is an understandably important part of every teacher's method to educating. This was the most educational section for me so far, since I have only had to create a lesson plan while in college as part of my own learning process. I definitely appreciate the form given within the unit demonstrating an example of a proper plan and the benefit of seeing one done in this fashion.
Keeping the plan simple and flexible is definitely a goal. I know from substituting that every day will not go as planned, and that a teacher needs to be able to adjust as they go. Scripting a lesson does not help since changes happen, and not everything can be predicted. However a structure for the day will help keep things moving along the right path even as things adapt.
Personally I am an organized person, and that section I do not see having a particular problem with. I agree with making sure all the materials are present and accounted for, and that all the needed equipment is in working order. Arriving with enough time to lay out everything that should be needed is a must, and keeping the board clean ahead will ensure less delay in the lesson. From my own experience I can agree with chatting with the students as they enter each day. I breaks the ice, gets them in the mood to learn, and helps keep a friendly rapport going with them through the class.
A teacher should always consider possible problems, how long each lesson will take, how each part will be approached, and who will be interacting at each stage. A lesson plan also helps keep a record of what happened that day, how well it went, of any issues that came up that can be resolved the next time that particular lesson is being taught. It is an invaluable tool for teachers, and I can say this unit helped me appreciate that fact more than I already did.
