This unit covers the receptive skills required in learning any language - namely reading and listening. Both are of equal importance, and we should incorporate reading, listening, speaking and writing in a balanced manner over the course. One of the main things I have gathered from this unit is the importance of selecting interesting topics that elicit interest in the students, and how to use the topics to apply the receptive skills. Related to this selection of suitable topics is the importance of building a good rapport with the students to have an idea of what interests each of them, and then bringing the relevant topics to life in class. With regards to the selection of related texts to be used in a lesson, I also learnt about the importance of finding a good balance between using non-authentic texts and authentic texts. Non-authentic texts are catered to the language levels of the students, and will probably be a good resource for them to practise and familiarise themselves with the new grammar or words. Authentic texts and tasks involved have to be carefully selected to build the students' confidence in application of their new language skills. With these careful selections of texts and tasks, incorporation of activate phase tasks that naturally lead on from the text should encourage the students in their learning.
