This unit discussed the productive skills, speaking and writing. In order to engage students, the teacher should choose topics that interest students and encourage student interaction. Students can be shy to speak due to a multitude of reasons. If the teacher is able to create a comfortable atmosphere, the students will be at ease learning and discovering the new language.
When it comes to speaking, there is a difference between accuracy and fluency - accuracy being more concerned with producing the correct forms of language and fluency being more concerned with creative usage and discovery of the language. Accuracy occurs during the study phase with the engage and activate phase being more focused on fluency. To encourage student participation in both fluency and accuracy activities, the teacher should create a comfortable atmosphere, have all materials handy, give clear instructions, allow students planning and thinking time before activities, and give proper feedback.
Writing can be difficult for new learners of English because the language is not phonetic. In order for students to understand the subtleties of the English language, it is important to expose them to a variety of written text - the more reading the do, the better exposure they will have to proper spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, and layout. Creative writing and games are fun ways to encourage students to write and participate in the classroom.
