Productive skills are equally as important as receptive skills. You can't really have one without the other. You have to be able to understand the English language in order to speak it and write it. When you communicate with someone, there is always a purpose behind it. In order for the other person to understand that purpose, you have to be able to communicate accurately and effectively. I learned from this unit that there needs to be a good balance of accuracy activities and fluency activities. These activities also need to take place at appropriate times of the lesson. Students are not going to be as receptive to the lesson if you are treating a fluency activity as if it were an accuracy activity and vise versa.
Writing is more neglected and often challenging. It is still important to encourage students to improve their writing skills when possible. Being able to effectively speak and write in English can help students be better communicators.
I also learned that integrating games into the lesson can help make the lesson more fun and interesting therefore encouraging student participation.
