Unit 7 discusses two of the four basic skills in any language. The four skills are reading & listening and speaking and writing. This unit covers the first two, reading and listening--so called "Receptive Skills." (Writing and speaking are referred to as "Productive Skills.")
Emphasis is put on careful selection of topics and on using a variety of material. In this way, the teacher is more likely to interest/motivate as many students as possible, over time.
Some of the difficulties with receptive skills are likely to be the language of the texts, the topic/s, and the tasks students are asked to perform. These challenges can be effectively ameliorated by pre-teaching of new/difficult vocabulary words, and careful choice of texts.
Examples of exercises available to the teacher include "Jigsaw Reading" and "Jumbled Texts."

Keys to a good Receptive Skills Lesson: Interesting material; build interest before reading/listening; pre-teach hard words; vary the type of material used; use the material to practice different skills; use realistic/achievable comprehension tasks that aid understanding; use activate phases that naturally lead on from the text.
