Testing and evaluations are needed periodically not only to gauge the students’ comprehension and retention but also to gauge the effectiveness of the teacher or material. Progress tests throughout the term are needed to see how well the students are retaining the material. Whereas, mid-terms, finals or achievement tests are usually required by the school to test the English level progression. Practice exams are required to prepare students for local/national standardized tests, external exams or entrance exams for high school, college, etc. There is no right way or schedule of frequency for testing but there will likely be some sort of dictation from the school or guide offered by the course book. Teachers will also need to assess how effective they are presenting the material, so quizzes or evaluations by the students are also helpful.
