In this Unit, we learned about Classroom Management, which is maintaining discipline and motivation in a friendly and relaxed manner. Then we went on to techniques and methods we can use to create a well-managed classroom.
First, we talked about how body language and eye contact can have an effect on our students. Mastering this can help with student rapport, confidence, and productivity also. Using names properly also enhances a lesson, as a person’s name is their favorite word in any language.
Then we talked about grouping and how that can affect our lessons. Different grouping can be used to create different learning environments and suit your classroom for different activities, but can be limited by class size and furniture.
Next, we talked about Teacher Talk Time and how this generally is adverse to student learning. If the teacher is talking too much, students have little chance to produce the language and this often causes behavior problems. Moreover, improper delivery of instruction can cause stress.
Increased rapport with the students is critical to fostering the student-teacher relationship. We learned a number of practical ways to foster a stimulated atmosphere.
Finally, we learned how discipline and the degree to which we maintain it is critical to our lessons running smoothly. We learned a number of reasons for problem behavior as well as some simple ways to prevent more problems, then how to respond appropriately if it arises anyway.
