The receptive skills are listening and reading, because learners do not need to produce language to do these, they receive and understand it. These skills are sometimes known as passive skills. They can be contrasted with the productive or active skills of speaking and writing. In receptive or passive learning, the direction of learning is from written or spoken form to meaning; we derive knowledge of words through encountering them in text and speech. Most often receptive learning is associated with learning language through reading and listening.
