In Unit 3, Managing Classrooms, we are taught varying methods of classroom arrangement, appropriate gestures, and group-work activity structure. In terms of gesture, eye contact is extremely important for students-teacher respect, and demonstrates that the teacher is in a dominating position. Additionally, it is important to use a student’s name from time-to-time while also speaking with a clear, concise, voice.
In terms of classroom arrangement, there exists a variety of options including: Orderly Rows, Circles and Horseshoes, Separate Table, etc., and each brings their own inherit advantages and disadvantages. It is important to note that the teacher’s position in each of these arrangements is equally as important to that of the students.
In sum, good methodology and practice will help you establish rapport with a student, which in return, will help maintain discipline and order in a classroom; all things important to a good teacher-student relationship.
