In Unit 8, Teaching Productive Skills, we are taught the different types of productive skills: speaking and writing. Teachers learn the variety of issues that a non native English speaker may experience when trying to learn how to write in the English language such as: correct penmanship, spelling, and punctuation. Furthermore, teachers learn the important difference between grading Accuracy vs. grading Fluency. More specifically, accuracy concerns itself with ensuring the student is producing correct or accurate English language variants, whereas, fluency focuses more on allowing the student to experiment in a creative manner with the English language.
Each is important for a student to learn and play with, and a good English teacher must make use of both in his or her classroom.
