This unit provided information on the importance of receptive skills focusing on reading and listening skills. How we read and listen for a purpose (useful information we need to know) or for pleasure (information we seek to find out more about). Then it explained the different types of reading from scanning- reading/listening for specific information, to skimming- reading/listening to get basic idea, predictive- using headlines/ names to understand what the topic is about, detailed information- listening/reading to every specific detail of topic/text, and context- getting meaning beyond the literal word or phrase. We learned the advantages of pre-teaching vocabulary to get students prepared for upcoming words/ phrases they will be hearing and or using for the lesson. How to focus lessons around interests / topics that motivate the students to participate, and how to create an interest with your lesson.
