Several methodologies may be employed; however, the model used in this course is the ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) promulgated by Jeremy Harmer. The Engage stage is similar to Madeline Hunter's Anticipatory set phase of a lesson; it's like a "warm-up" activity that may or may not be tied to the next stage. The main point in the Engage stage is to get all students to talk; teacher talk is minimal. The next stage--STUDY--is basically an introduction of the language concept or point of focus. The key in this stage is to elicit information and thinking from students, not to dump information on them. The final stage is Activate, in which students extend and apply their prior and current learning creativity is emphasized. The initial stage in each lesson should be the ENGAGE stage, and the structure of the lesson beyond that can be simple (three-stages, in order) or a combination of repeating stages, depending on the complexity of the lesson--based on the ability of the group.
