Unit 9 covers the usage of Coursebooks and lesson materials. It discusses the 2 groups of materials. One is authentic materials , that can be read, seen or heard in newspapers, TV shows , Radio, Menus etc and are dealing with real situations or information. The other is created materials, generally designed by the teacher to replace or support materials from Coursebooks, this type of information can be targeted to the student group and the level of the student. The use of Coursebooks holds an important place in the teaching situation as it acts as a syllabus and a progression through the level being taught . Students will often feel safer utilising a coursebook and it can offer inexperienced teachers many good ideas. However Coursebooks can be limiting as they are often out of touch with the students they are directed towards. They don't take into consideration the students background , culture or interests. They can become predictable and students may lose interest. Teachers who only follow course books can become lazy and lack creativity , thus not offering the best outcome for their student. It would seem the best is to use the course book ,along side created materials , that take the students interests into account. The teacher , who observes the students , adapts , creates , leaves out or replaces materials in the Coursebook will have the best outcome , in my opinion. The use of authentic material can be stimulating to students and can give them confidence but these materials need to be carefully selected based upon the level of the students.
